Completed in Salerno in 1974, the Church of the Holy Family transformed reinforced concrete into waves, circles and light — creating a sacred interior that behaves less like a monument than a living organism.

There is a moment inside the Church of the Holy Family in Salerno when concrete appears to stop behaving like concrete.
Above the altar, heavy rings rise and overlap. Curved surfaces seem to move outward from invisible centers. Walls bend, openings interrupt their rhythm, and daylight enters from above as though the ceiling itself had been pulled open.
The material is unquestionably solid.
The experience is not.
Designed by Paolo Portoghesi and Vittorio Gigliotti, the Church of the Holy Family — Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia — was conceived in 1969 and substantially completed in 1974 in Fratte, an industrial district of Salerno. Today, it remains one of the more extraordinary experiments in postwar Italian sacred architecture.
But to understand why the building still feels surprisingly contemporary more than fifty years later, it is useful to look beyond religion.
The project is also an experiment in what architecture can do when structure, movement, symbolism and human perception are treated as a single design problem.
Concrete Without Brutalism

At first glance, the building invites an easy classification.
Concrete. Monumental scale. Exposed structure. 1970s.
Brutalism seems almost inevitable.
Yet that description misses much of what Portoghesi and Gigliotti were attempting.
The Church of the Holy Family does not use concrete primarily to communicate mass, severity or structural authority. Instead, reinforced concrete becomes a medium through which space can expand, contract, curve and apparently move.
Its ceiling is formed through intersecting systems of concentric rings. According to Italy’s Ministry of Culture architectural atlas, the composition originates from six distinct circular polarities. Three generate the roof of the main hall, while another three form curving boundaries that help define both interior and exterior space.
Each successive element projects approximately 25 centimetres beyond the previous one, producing the extraordinary stepped surfaces visible overhead.
Seen from below, the effect is almost geological.
Or perhaps biological.
Architecture no longer appears assembled from walls and roof. It seems to have grown.
A Building Designed From Ripples

The circle is the fundamental language of the project.
Rather than organizing the church through the conventional sequence of nave, aisle and distant altar, Portoghesi and Gigliotti created a system of overlapping circular fields.
One description of the project compares their expansion to ripples produced by stones falling into water. Research on the church similarly describes the geometry as an attempt to translate principles of growth, continuity and organic movement into architectural form.
That distinction matters.
A circle is usually understood as a closed figure.
Here, it becomes an event.
One circle produces another. Curves collide. Walls inherit the movement of the roof. Vertical surfaces become convex or concave depending on which spatial field reaches them.
The building effectively turns geometry into choreography.
Long before contemporary architecture became fascinated with algorithmically generated forms, parametric surfaces and digitally calculated curvature, this project was already asking a remarkably similar question:
What happens when architecture is generated by relationships rather than composed as a collection of objects?
The tools were different.
The instinct was not.
Borromini, Rewritten in Concrete

Portoghesi’s architecture cannot be separated easily from architectural history.
His fascination with the Italian Baroque — and particularly Francesco Borromini — informed decades of research and design.
The geometry of the Salerno church has been connected specifically to Borromini’s Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza in Rome, where intersecting circles and geometries generate one of the great spatial experiments of the Baroque. In Salerno, however, those relationships are loosened from a static geometrical diagram and reorganized through rotation and expansion.
The result is neither historical reproduction nor straightforward modernism.
It is something more interesting: history treated as design intelligence.
Portoghesi does not copy the appearance of Baroque architecture.
He takes one of its deeper ideas — that walls can move visually, that geometry can create emotional tension, that architecture can lead the eye upward — and translates it into reinforced concrete.
The past becomes a system rather than a style.
When the Ceiling Becomes Landscape

The most extraordinary part of the church may be its ceiling.
Its concentric concrete ribs rise and fall almost like contours on a topographic map. Above the principal altar, their intersection produces a circular opening through which daylight enters the building.
Suddenly an exceptionally heavy material becomes the instrument for something immaterial.
Light.
The same principle appears within the Eucharistic chapel, where another opening from above illuminates the tabernacle area.
This relationship between weight and light is central to the experience of the building.
Concrete establishes gravity.
Curvature destabilizes it.
Light dissolves it.
Architecture therefore becomes less about observing an object than experiencing a sequence of perceptual contradictions.
The ceiling is heavy but appears fluid.
The geometry is mathematically controlled but feels organic.
The building is enclosed yet continually directs attention upward.
That tension may explain why photographs of the church circulate so effectively today. Even removed from its religious context, the interior remains visually difficult to categorize.
It could almost be a cavern.
A forest canopy.
A geological formation.
Or an imagined architecture generated decades ahead of its technological time.
Designing a Different Kind of Gathering

There was also a profound functional reason behind this transformation of space.
The Church of the Holy Family emerged shortly after the Second Vatican Council, whose reforms changed the relationship between clergy, congregation and liturgical space.
Rather than positioning worshippers primarily as spectators facing a distant ceremonial endpoint, post-conciliar churches increasingly emphasized participation and community.
In Salerno, the altar therefore occupies a central position within a single, fluid hall. The Ministry of Culture specifically identifies this organization as responding to the liturgical reforms that followed Vatican II.
Architecture followed a changing social relationship.
And that may be one of the project’s most important design lessons.
A space is never merely aesthetic.
Its geometry decides who faces whom.
Its circulation decides how people meet.
Its hierarchy determines what becomes important.
By reorganizing those relationships, Portoghesi and Gigliotti were not simply giving a church a new appearance.
They were redesigning its social structure.
More Than Fifty Years Later

Contemporary architecture is increasingly interested in softness.
Curved interiors, biophilic forms, parametric surfaces, tactile materials and spaces inspired by landscapes have become familiar components of twenty-first-century design vocabulary.
Against that backdrop, the Church of the Holy Family feels unexpectedly current.
Yet it was conceived without contemporary modelling software, digital fabrication or today’s obsession with computational geometry.
Its complexity emerged from drawing, structural calculation, concrete and an unusually ambitious understanding of space.
That is perhaps what makes the building worth reconsidering now.
The project demonstrates that innovation is not necessarily the invention of an unfamiliar shape.
Sometimes it is the decision to rethink what architecture is supposed to feel like.
In Salerno, concrete was asked to ripple.
A ceiling was asked to behave like a landscape.
Geometry was asked to communicate both community and transcendence.
And a building designed more than half a century ago was made to feel as though it were still moving.
The Church of the Holy Family is not extraordinary because it rejects architectural history.
It is extraordinary because Portoghesi and Gigliotti understood that history itself could be made fluid.
