Falcon 10X: The French Private Jet Designed for the Unreachable

On 19 June 2026, the Dassault Falcon 10X lifted away from Bordeaux-Mérignac for its maiden flight, beginning a certification campaign expected to last approximately two years. The aircraft’s first departure placed a machine conceived in digital models, wind tunnels and production halls into the environment that will ultimately define it: high altitude, high speed and intercontinental distance.

The 10X is the largest and longest-range business aircraft Dassault Aviation has developed. Its projected range of 7,500 nautical miles, maximum operating speed of Mach 0.925 and cabin designed for as many as 19 passengers position it among the most capable purpose-built private jets of its generation. The programme also carries a particularly French interpretation of aviation: technical precision, controlled proportions and an interior planned around personal space rather than visible excess.

For Dassault, the aircraft represents the culmination of knowledge shared across civil aviation, military engineering and advanced digital flight-control systems. Its value lies in how these disciplines have been assembled into a single aircraft intended for owners whose itineraries, privacy requirements and expectations exceed conventional first-class travel.

A Flagship Takes Flight

The first Falcon 10X completed its inaugural flight a little over three months after its official rollout in Mérignac on 10 March 2026. Dassault described the flight as the beginning of a broader test programme covering performance, systems, handling qualities and certification requirements.

Its scale is immediately apparent. The fuselage is longer and broader than that of any previous Falcon, while the swept composite wing gives the aircraft a restrained, purposeful silhouette. Dassault developed the 10X as a clean-sheet design, allowing the company to reconsider the relationship between aerodynamic performance, cabin volume and operational flexibility.

The aircraft is expected to fly nonstop between cities such as New York and Shanghai, Los Angeles and Sydney, Hong Kong and New York, or Paris and Santiago. These routes describe the world of the 10X more accurately than a conventional list of specifications. It belongs to an international geography shaped by private terminals, secure transfers and schedules built around the passenger.

The projected maximum operating altitude of 51,000 feet allows the aircraft to travel above much of the commercial traffic and weather encountered at lower levels. Dassault also lists a takeoff distance of less than 6,000 feet under specified maximum-weight conditions and a landing distance below 2,500 feet under its stated passenger and reserve configuration. These figures are designed to give the large aircraft access to a wider selection of airports than its dimensions might suggest.

The Architecture of Distance

The cabin provides the clearest expression of the Falcon 10X’s ambition. At approximately 2.77 metres wide and 2.03 metres high, it is presented by Dassault as the largest cabin available in a purpose-built business jet. Passengers can stand comfortably, move between zones and occupy spaces conceived with the proportions of a private interior rather than a narrow aircraft fuselage.

Cabin length allows the interior to be divided into several individual environments. Depending on the owner’s requirements, these can include a formal dining area, private office, media lounge, guest seating and a principal suite with a full-size bed. The modular structure gives designers considerable freedom to determine how each section will function and how much separation should exist between working, entertaining and sleeping.

This flexibility matters during flights that can extend across continents and time zones. A passenger may conduct meetings after departure, dine several hours later and sleep through the final part of the journey without leaving the same controlled environment. The cabin becomes a sequence of rooms, each responding to a different period of the flight.

Thirty-eight windows line the fuselage, each almost 50 percent larger than those installed on the Falcon 8X. Their size increases the amount of daylight entering the interior and changes the visual relationship between cabin and sky. High-speed connectivity, including available Ka-band service, is intended to support continuous communication throughout long-range missions.

The design challenge is considerable. Materials must satisfy strict aviation standards while retaining the quality expected from a residential commission. Veneers, leather, textiles, stone-like surfaces and metal details have to remain light, durable and secure under changing atmospheric conditions. Every object is integrated into the structure of the aircraft, from cabinetry and tables to lighting systems and entertainment equipment.

The result will depend heavily on the individual owner. One cabin may adopt pale woods, neutral upholstery and concealed technology; another may use darker lacquer, brushed metal and sharply defined architectural lines. Exclusivity emerges through the precision of the commission and the degree to which the aircraft reflects one person’s habits.

Power Developed for the 10X

Two Rolls-Royce Pearl 10X engines power the aircraft. Developed specifically for Dassault’s new flagship, the Pearl 10X is the most powerful member of the Pearl family and the first Rolls-Royce engine selected for a Dassault business jet.

The partnership brings together two distinct engineering cultures. Dassault contributes decades of experience in aerodynamics, flight controls and aircraft integration, while Rolls-Royce supplies an engine conceived for sustained high-speed, ultra-long-range operation. During the first flight, the powerplants moved from development programme to operational reality, providing the thrust required to begin the aircraft’s airborne testing phase.

The composite wing is equally important. Its architecture combines reduced weight with aerodynamic efficiency, while slats and flaps preserve the low-speed handling and runway performance associated with the Falcon family. The wing must support a large cabin and substantial fuel capacity without compromising the agility required during approach and landing.

Fighter Knowledge in a Civil Aircraft

Dassault’s military heritage appears most clearly in the Falcon 10X’s digital flight-control system. The manufacturer has incorporated technologies informed by its experience developing combat aircraft, including protections against unintended loss of control and systems designed to assist the crew during demanding conditions.

The NeXus flight deck introduces extensive touchscreen interfaces, advanced automation and a single smart throttle controlling both engines. Dassault has also developed a recovery function intended to return the aircraft to a stable flight condition when activated in an appropriate emergency. These systems place safety engineering at the centre of the aircraft’s identity.

The connection to fighter aircraft should be understood through engineering practice rather than visual drama. A private jet does not need the manoeuvrability of a combat aircraft. It benefits from the precision of its controls, the clarity of information delivered to its pilots and the ability of its systems to anticipate or correct potentially dangerous conditions.

This transfer of knowledge gives the Falcon 10X a character distinct from private aircraft built primarily around cabin size or range. The interior may resemble a contemporary residence, while the architecture beneath it remains that of a highly advanced flight machine.

French Design Without Display

The Falcon 10X enters a market populated by aircraft whose dimensions and capabilities already approach those of private airliners. Its identity is quieter. The exterior avoids ornamental gestures, and the cabin has been presented as an adaptable volume rather than a fixed decorative statement.

That restraint reflects a broader tradition within French luxury, where materials, proportion and workmanship often carry greater importance than immediate recognition. The 10X does not need to announce its price on the runway. Its scarcity, engineering complexity and capacity for individual commissioning already place it beyond ordinary access.

Ownership also extends far beyond the acquisition of the aircraft. A jet of this scale requires professional pilots, cabin crew, technical support, international flight planning, maintenance provision, insurance and secure hangar space. Its operation becomes a permanent global infrastructure organised around the movements of one owner, family or corporation.

Price alone therefore gives an incomplete picture of exclusivity. The greater privilege is control: deciding when to leave, who enters the cabin, where the aircraft lands and how the hours between continents are used.

Designed for the Unreachable

The word “unreachable” describes several dimensions of the Falcon 10X. It refers to distant cities connected without a scheduled-airline itinerary. It also describes places accessible through smaller airports, private terminals and routes selected according to personal requirements.

There is a social meaning as well. The aircraft is being developed for an exceptionally narrow group of clients capable of commissioning, operating and maintaining one of the most complex private machines in production. Every cabin will express a degree of personal decision rarely available in commercial transportation.

The 10X remains within its flight-test and certification phase. Its final position in business aviation will depend on the completion of that programme, the performance of production aircraft and the experience delivered to owners once it enters service. For now, its maiden flight has transformed the project from an ambitious proposition into an aircraft moving under its own power.

In the Falcon 10X, distance is treated as a design problem. Engines, flight controls, cabin proportions and personal interiors have been organised around the same objective: allowing a small number of passengers to cross the world inside an environment created entirely for them.

That is the particular promise of Dassault’s new flagship. It offers access to places defined by geography, privacy and time—places that remain unreachable to almost everyone else.
